Sing it loud and proud, kids! We’ve got some vocal stars in the making at Tufnell Park…

Weeks of rehearsal under the expert tuition of Ms Brereton came to fruition today: Delphinus’s classroom was turned into a temporary recording studio and every class sang their hearts out for the forthcoming school CD – a brief history of popular music from 1920(ish) to present day.

To judge by the work they put in and the lively sounds of the last 80 or so years that were filling the lobby all day, it’s going to be a record well worth having. Which is lucky, because every child in the school gets a free copy – it’s all part of a Music Learning Treat, funded by the HSA. Sing along – parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents too!

What the HSA Committee talked about…

…on Tuesday 19th May 2015

Cupcakes, lobby walls - you name it, we'll put smarties on it.

Cupcakes, lobby walls – you name it, we’ll put smarties on it.

A stream of “thank you”s were high on the agenda: to all parents who helped out at the fantastic Give & Gain day on 15th May (there were SO MANY of you!) and to our corporate supporters – Jewson, Santander and Chris Stevens – as well; and in particular, to Andromeda and Cygnus parents Rachel, Patrick and Adam for leading design and execution of the new-look corridor and lobby. Replacement furniture and a new IT installation are still to come, but the space is already truly transformed.

Is this the face that shipped a thousand lunches? (Well, it's one of the faces - thank you ALL involved!).

Also, a massive thank you to everyone who helped make the extraordinary whole-school trip to Sobell Centre on 18th May happen, and happen so successfully: most notably Carolyne (mum of Emma and Luke) for kicking it off and our co-Chair Fiona for seeing through every detail. The school’s kitchen staff, chef John and Caterlink area manager Noel also went all out to help make the day special, as did the lovely instructors and staff at the Sobell.

The forthcoming Summer Fair (Carnival!) on 11th July necessarily took up most of the meeting’s discussion. Look out for the next HSA newsletter in your children’s PACT folders for full details of the stalls that are planned and what we need to make the fair another huge success. It’s certainly never too late to come up with an idea for a stall or activity of your own. And it can’t be said too often: we will always, ALWAYS need more face-painters than we have! Please volunteer – older siblings are also warmly welcome to help.

Even before the fair, the rest of this term is choc-a-block with HSA activity. Tuesday 16th June is recording day for the Music Learning Treat – a CD of songs from across the span of the last 100 years. Entries for the CD cover competition are on display in the school lobby: go in and take a look. They’re wonderful – hard to believe that someone is going to have to choose just one…

On Friday 19th June, national “Empty Classroom Day”, we’re focusing on ecological water use in honour of our volunteer team from Thames Water, who are coming to help build the foundations for the school’s Early Years forest school. Rain chains, soaker hoses, drip irrigation… there’s a whole new vocabulary to be learned.

The annual children’s Fun Run is the following week, Thursday 25th and Friday 26th June. Carolyne (again) and HSA resources manager, Becca, have kindly responded to our appeal for new parents to organise the event now that Fun Run instigator and brilliant long-term HSA supporter, Sara, is moving on.

And to end with another thank you: thank you Anna, mum of Freya in Aquila and Evie in Cygnus, for stepping up as HSA secretary. Anyone on the email list can expect to hear from Anna soon…

What the HSA talked about…

… at the 2014 AGM on Thursday 2nd October.

2013-14 AGM display

Isn’t it amazing what our school community achieved in one short year?

It was brilliant to see so many faces – familiar and new – at the AGM last week, and so many people eager to get involved.

Thank you to Liliana, mother of Yosef in Delphinus – and a chartered accountant in her native Colombia – for stepping up as our new Treasurer. Our out-going co-treasurers, Franky and Sarah, who have achieved absolute wonders in their four years in post, are pleased to leave their work in safe hands.

We also said farewell and thank you to co-Chair John, and put out an appeal for a new co-Chair to step up next to Fiona. It seems that our Resources manager, Mags (mother of Mary in Draco) may answer the call… Please take a look here at this year’s Committee, so you know who they are.

Before stepping down, Franky announced a fantastic £7,000 profit on HSA turnover over the last year. This means that, setting aside £2,000 to run Winter Wonderland and the Summer Fair, we have £5,000 to assign to new projects in the year ahead.

That’s in addition to £4,000 that has been raised for a very special school trip for every child in the school. We’re working on three possible options and hope to be able to put those to the whole school for a vote very shortly.

There’s also a new Learning Treat – a music project – already funded, to be designed by Ms Brereton with Mr Scarborough’s help. Watch this space!

We’re interested in sourcing more Learning Treats – in collaboration with school staff – that help make core subjects really exciting and fun for all our kids. And we’re dreaming up big school improvement projects, too, such as a competition for the children to keep their toilet block clean in return for having it redecorated according to their own designs (thank you Rhea, mother of Che in Delphinus, for suggesting that one).

The winter celebration team is already starting its researches...

Other suggestions from parents at the meeting were a Halloween dress-up day, some gorgeous Tufnell Park merchandise (think: red hoodies), and ideas about charities to support during the year.

The AGM ended with a great team coming together to plan our annual Winter celebration – headed by Jo (mother of Louie in Andromeda), who was already looking the part under a sprinkling of silver glitter.

The next meeting is on Wednesday 15th October (next Wednesday) at 8:00pm.  Please let us know if you want to come – the venue will be determined by numbers attending.
