World Book Day at TPS – Multi-Language Event

This World Book Day we’re welcoming back a much-loved tradition in the Tufnell Park community – the Our Story Multi-Language Event.  One of our parents explains more: “The multi-language World Book Day event is always lively and fun, and it’s sweet too. It’s very rare to have the chance to listen to language without needing to work out what the words mean – the sounds can be beautiful, or strange, and the variety of languages we have at school is amazingly rich.  The more languages that are represented, the better – some years, teachers bring their contributions, too. Also, seeing adults and children reading, speaking and singing familiar words together and for each other is heartwarming. It’s such a simple idea and it works incredibly well.”

Come to the the hall after school; there will be free tea and homemade biscuits including Turkish kurabiye.  Children will be invited to choose a free book from the book swap and there will be short performances and readings in Somali, Arabic, Bengali, Turkish, Welsh, Spanish, Maori, Czech, Bulgarian, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Polish and English.  Poet Paul Lyall’s KS2 poetry group will be performing “Belly Button Fluff” and Philthestoryteller’s KS2 drama club will performing a short piece using gibberish.

We will also be presenting a giant book of Our Story. The book is an ongoing project that showcases poems, writing, photographs and drawings contributed by children across the school. From the next school year, the book will be housed in the new school library. There will be a craft table where children can do a drawing inspired by a book or poem as part of the giant book project.

We look forward to seeing you there.
